ARC Review: Alienated by Melissa Landers #COYER

Alienated
by Melissa Landers
Release Date: Expected publication: February 4th 2014 by Disney Hyperion
Series: Alienated #1
Pages: 352
View/Purchase: Goodreads, Amazon, B&N

Two years ago, the aliens made contact. Now Cara Sweeney is going to be sharing a bathroom with one of them.

Handpicked to host the first-ever L’eihr exchange student, Cara thinks her future is set. Not only does she get a free ride to her dream college, she’ll have inside information about the mysterious L’eihrs that every journalist would kill for. Cara’s blog following is about to skyrocket.

Still, Cara isn’t sure what to think when she meets Aelyx. Humans and L’eihrs have nearly identical DNA, but cold, infuriatingly brilliant Aelyx couldn’t seem more alien. She’s certain about one thing, though: no human boy is this good-looking.

But when Cara's classmates get swept up by anti-L'eihr paranoia, Midtown High School suddenly isn't safe anymore. Threatening notes appear in Cara's locker, and a police officer has to escort her and Aelyx to class.

Cara finds support in the last person she expected. She realizes that Aelyx isn’t just her only friend; she's fallen hard for him. But Aelyx has been hiding the truth about the purpose of his exchange, and its potentially deadly consequences. Soon Cara will be in for the fight of her life—not just for herself and the boy she loves, but for the future of her planet.

My Review:

Alienated is A Must Read!

Not having read any “alien story” before, I didn't know what to expect. The premise sounded promising and the cover sealed the deal for me. As soon as I started reading I found myself loving the story, it was cleverly written and hilarious. Melissa Landers does such a good job describing how the characters felt and the setting in general. I found the alien world (L'eihr) very intriguing and for that, I have to say that it made me love the book that much more.

From the very beginning we are introduced to the main character, Cara Sweeney, a high school student whose strong personality has her picked by the L'eihrs to host a student in her house in order to learn more from one another. At first she isn't quite sure what to expect, but the minute she meets Aelyx her world begins to change. Those that are around her begin to turn her back on her and people are starting to hate her for hosting an alien in her house. Nothing comes easy with having a L'eihr in her home, especially when that L'eihr is charming and good-looking. As the two of them start spending more time with each other, they both start learning just how much they have in common and how difficult it is to be apart. Now Cara has to decide whether or not to risk everything she has for the one she loves.

I absolutely loved how there is both Cara's and Aelyx's point-of-view. It made the story that much more interesting to read. Their moments together were also sweet and funny. I really liked Aelyx's personality, especially when he starts to feel human emotions and how strong love can be. The ending left me speechless and with a twist like that, I really want to read the next book already! Overall, I recommend everyone to read this book, it has elements of a great romance/adventure story that anyone can enjoy.

Review: The Trouble with Mojitos by Romy Sommer #COYER

The Trouble with Mojitos
by Romy Sommer
Released Date: Published October 17th 2013 by HarperCollins UK, HarperImpulse
Pages: 331
View/Purchase: Goodreads, Amazon, B&N

Turquoise blue waters. Sandy white beaches. Mojitos... Film location scout Kenzie Cole has found herself in paradise. Working in the Caribbean for a week is just what she needs to escape the long line of exes in her closet. Though the last thing she expects is to be picked up at the resort bar by a disgraced former Prince!

Luckily for Kenzie, exile is suiting the man formerly known as Prince Fredrik very well. And it’s not long before his rugged, pirate charm is proving hard to resist.

But Rik’s been spending his time in paradise exorcising demons of his own and he has danger written all over him. If Kenzie was sensible she’d run a mile instead of lose herself to lust - although, they do say sometimes you have to get lost before you can be found....

(Synopsis taken from Goodreads)

My Review:

The Trouble with Mojitos is such a great romantic story that would appeal to those that are looking for a new take of your typical “girl-meets-prince-kind-of-story.” This story has a more adventurous feel to it, and the setting is unexpected. I love how Romy Sommer describes the setting, it's very vivid and the interaction between Kenzie Cole and Rik is instant. But with an unexpected setting comes secrets as well and Rik is full of the. After been on exile, the former Prince decides to take refuge on an island (where he knows no one is going to give him trouble).

But on the night of his birthday, he meets film location scout, Kenzie Cole. From the start he is intrigued to find out more about her and the more time they spend together, the more he starts to feel wanted and not alone. As they set out to find the perfect film location, Kenzie can't deny the attraction that she has toward Rik, but they very well know that their time together is short. Nothing comes easy when it comes to loving someone, especially when that someone is a Prince.

From the minute I saw the cover, I immediately knew that I had to read this book and it didn't disappoint. The book flowed beautifully and the plot is fun to read. I recommend everyone to give this book a try, it has a mix of royalty and adventure all in one. :)

Series: Pushing the Limits #3
Pages: 474
View/Purchase: Goodreads, Amazon, B&N

The girl with straight As, designer clothes and the perfect life-that's who people expect Rachel Young to be. So the private-school junior keeps secrets from her wealthy parents and overbearing brothers...and she's just added two more to the list. One involves racing strangers down dark country roads in her Mustang GT. The other? Seventeen-year-old Isaiah Walker-a guy she has no business even talking to. But when the foster kid with the tattoos and intense gray eyes comes to her rescue, she can't get him out of her mind.

Isaiah has secrets, too. About where he lives, and how he really feels about Rachel. The last thing he needs is to get tangled up with a rich girl who wants to slum it on the south side for kicks-no matter how angelic she might look.

But when their shared love of street racing puts both their lives in jeopardy, they have six weeks to come up with a way out. Six weeks to discover just how far they'll go to save each other.

(Synopsis taken from Goodreads)

My Review:

I loved this book! The characters were great and the over all story was fantastic. Katie McGarry did it again for me this time around. She captured the lives of two polar opposites and brought them together by adding car racing in the mix. From the start we get to see a little bit of Isaiah and his past. He has struggled every since his mom left him, and since them no one knows where she has been, expect for Isaiah. But when he has the chance to see his mother again, he wants nothing to do with her. With problems coming his way, he definitely doesn't need another one. But everything changes after meeting Rachel Young.

Rachel Young is a the “perfect girl” with rich parents that have giving her everything, including overbearing brothers that still treat her like a baby. But when you're having the shadow of your dead sister following you around, there has to be a way to get free right? Well that's exactly what Rachel does whenever she feels anxious or just wants to be away for the night. With the help of her twin brother, she does what not other seventeen-year-old girls do and that is car racing. She loves cars and the adrenaline rush that she gets from driving her car. But things don't always end up right, especially when you meet a very hot guy with dazzling looks and tattoos. When the two of them first meet sparks started flying and the connection that they had was instant. They both share their love for street racing, and it is because of that, that their adventure really begins.

I really enjoyed reading this book, it has an adventurous feeling to it and the interaction between Rachel and Isaiah completely draws you in. The writing flowed beautifully and the plot left me wanting for more (especially at the end) :) I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series and I would recommend everyone to give this book/series a try, you won't regret it.

(Synopsis taken from Goodreads)

My Review:

When seventeen-year-old Sia wakes up on a park bench, she has no idea who or where she is. Lost and disorientated, she is afraid to ask for help, encountering danger she gets saved by a homeless woman. She teaches her how to get around, and with that she spends her week as a homeless person. That is until she gets hit by a car and ends up in the hospital where she discovers who she really is. Terrified of her past self, she is determined to change and change the minds of those that have hated her for what she has done to them in the past. The more she learns about herself and those around her, she discovers just how important friendships are and who are worth fighting for.

I enjoyed the book, it was great, but I've seen this story so many times that it became too predictable for me. The very beginning of the story had me intrigued, but as it progressed it started too feel unrealistic, especially when things started moving too fast that it all ended rather quickly. From the premise of the book, we get an interesting twist to your typical “mean girl story”, it had potential to be great, yet it lacked a more detail resolution to the conflict. The writing was great, it flowed very well. Overall, this book was good and I would recommend it to anyone that just wants a fast book to read, and it's not expecting too much out of it.

Review: The Iron Traitor (The Iron Fey: Call of the Forgotten #2) by Julie Kagawa

The Iron Traitor
by Julie Kagawa
Released Date: Published October 29th 2013 by Harlequin Teen
Series: The Iron Fey: Call of the Forgotten #2
Pages: 304
View/Purchase: Goodreads, Amazon, B&N

In the real world, when you vanish into thin air for a week, people tend to notice.

After his unexpected journey into the lands of the fey, Ethan Chase just wants to get back to normal. Well, as "normal" as you can be when you see faeries every day of your life. Suddenly the former loner with the bad reputation has someone to try for-his girlfriend, Kenzie. Never mind that he's forbidden to see her again.

But when your name is Ethan Chase and your sister is one of the most powerful faeries in the Nevernever, "normal" simply isn't to be. For Ethan's nephew, Keirran, is missing, and may be on the verge of doing something unthinkable in the name of saving his own love. Something that will fracture the human and faery worlds forever, and give rise to the dangerous fey known as the Forgotten. As Ethan's and Keirran's fates entwine and Keirran slips further into darkness, Ethan's next choice may decide the fate of them all.

(Synopsis taken from Goodreads)

My Review:

I absolutely loved this book! Julie Kagawa has blown my mind completely. I'm still trying to regain my thoughts about this book and what happened. No matter what Ethan Chase does, he can't seem to live at peace with all the fey following him around. After his return from the Nevernever, all he wanted was to have a normal life with his girlfriend Kenzie, but that didn't last long before his sister visits him and tells him that his nephew, Kierran, has gone missing. He knows that if he wants the fey to leave him alone, he should ignore everything that has to do with them, but when Annwyln comes asking for his help, he can no longer ignore what he has to do. After all, family should stick together no matter what right? In his quest of finding his nephew, he faces danger when he goes back to the world that he promised he'd never return. Now, with his girlfriend and Annwyln by his side, he'll have to find Kierran and stop him from causing more trouble.

I almost forgot how much I love Julie's writing, it's so vivid and it makes the whole book come to life. The flow of the story was both exciting and thrilling. It was hard to stop reading the book, without knowing what was going to happen next. The only thing that I'm guessing everyone will hate is the ending! The book ended with a huge cliffhanger and I can't stop thinking about what it's going to happen next. There were times when I felt bad for Ethan and Kenzie, it wasn't their battle to fight, but they both wanted to help Kierran. On the other hand, Kierran left me with mixed feelings, I can understand where his decisions were coming from, but he let what was around him cloud his better judgment. Although I wanted to see more from Meghan and Ash, there were some old characters that did showed up and I was ecstatic to see them come back again. Overall, the book was amazing. I recommend everyone to read the series you will absolutely love it.

But as he starts to envision a future with Ana, Ethan is devastated to learn the truth about her citizenship. Somehow he’s got to find a way to help her—and hold on to the woman he’s falling hopelessly in love with.

(Synopsis taken from Goodreads)

My Review:

Serena Bell does a good job describing the issues in the novel as well as the characters. I found myself intrigued at what was happening to them and the overall picture. Hiding in the shadows has become part of Ana Travares ever since she was a little girl. After coming to the States with her family, she suffers from a series of events that have changed her life and that of those around her. When she discovers that her visa has expired, her older brother has to take action and protect his family after the sudden death of their mother. Now, twenty years later and she is still living in fear of getting caught and deported. Ana has learned not to trust anyone, and that includes any love interest in her life. But when she meets Ethan Hansen, it becomes very clear that not trusting him will be a hard thing to do.

Ethan Hansen, a pediatrician and a widower has had trouble connecting with his teenage son, Theo. After the death of his wife, he was left to take care of his son all on his own. But having a teenage son isn't easy, especially when his son starts rebelling against him. When he finds out that his son is in need of an Spanish tutor, he hires Ana. It didn't take long before his son's tutoring sessions become some more for Ana and Ethan. But what he doesn't know is that she is hiding a secret from him, one that he'll have to decide whether to help her or move on.

I really enjoyed reading this book, it was fresh and it gives audiences a new perspective to a subject such as illegal immigration. Serena does a outstanding job by focusing more on the story rather than on the politics of the issue. Although it was part of the story, it didn't overshadow the romance within the book. The characters are very well developed and the story flowed well. Overall, I recommend everyone to give this story a try, you will not regret it.

Review: Geek Girls Don't Date Dukes by Gina Lamm

Geek Girls Don't Date Dukes
by Gina Lamm
Released Date: Published September 3rd 2013 by Sourcebooks Casablanca
Series: Geek Girls #2
Pages: 352
View/Purchase: Goodreads, Amazon, B&N

Leah Ramsey has always loved historical romance novels and dressing in period costumes. So when she has a chance to time travel and experience the history for herself, she jumps at it—figuring it can't be too hard to catch the eye of a duke. After all, it happens all the time in her novels.

Avery Russell, valet and prize pugilist, reluctantly helps Leah gain a position in the Duke of Granville's household . . . as a maid.

Domestic servitude wasn't exactly what she had in mind, but she's determined to win her happily ever after. Even if the hero isn't exactly who she's expecting.

(Synopsis taken from Goodreads)

My Review:

I'm really enjoying Gina Lamm's Geek Girls Series so far, the first book completely captured my attention and this book did exactly the same thing. From the cover to the title, I was very much interested in reading this book from the very beginning. The author mixes humor with romance and history all in one, and it works very well.

From the start we meet Leah Ramsey, she loves dressing up in period costumes and dreaming about her own fairy tale romance, but she hasn't been lucky when it comes to finding the right person to love. She knows that time travel is possible since her best friend, Jaime, has traveled back in time to find the love of her life. Leah knows that if she stays she is not going to find anyone that is going to make her happy. So she goes back in time, to Regency England to find the Duke she has been destined to be with. But not everything looks as it seems and she soon realizes that she might be making a mistake and her Duke wasn't meant for her at all. The more time she spends back in time, the more adventures she has, including meeting Avery Russell, whose help she desperately wants in order to find her true love.

I really liked Leah's personality in the book, she is strong minded, yet she is vulnerable when it comes to finding love. She is funny and I can only imagine what it would be like to travel back in time. Avery Russell is a very likable character, he is sensible and charming. Although he is not a Duke, he is a hard-working men who deeply cares about Leah and he does everything he can to keep her safe. The writing makes the story flow beautifully and I can easily connect with the characters which made everything that much more exciting. From action scenes to romantic nights, this book has it all. I recommend everyone to give this book a try, you will not regret it.

Review: Undertow by K.R. Conway

Undertow
by K.R. Conway
Released Date: Published October 11th 2013 by Conway
Series: Undertow #1
Pages: 398
View/Purchase: Goodreads, Amazon, B&N

Eila Walker knows luck is not a friend, so she is downright shocked to inherit a million-dollar Cape Cod home. And yeah, her new town isn't perfect: the cheerleaders are heinous clones, the local undertow can kill ya, and her Great Grams was supposedly fried by lightning in the harbor square. Still, Eila is hopeful her luckless days are in the past . . . until history decides to repeat itself.

When drool-worthy Raef O’Reilly becomes her friendly, yet weirdly protective shadow, Eila thinks life is pretty darn perfect – until she is hauled beneath the waves by an unnatural undertow. Revealing coal-black eyes and iron-like strength as he rescues her, Raef can no longer hide what he is . . . or what she can do. Eila, last of her kind, can supposedly channel the power of human souls, while Raef is more adept at stealing them. Even worse, the legend about her ancestor isn't such a myth, since Eila’s grandmother was one kick-butt warrior until her lightning-like power backfired. A power that is written all over Eila's DNA.

Determined to stay one step ahead of a dangerous clan that is hunting her, Raef, along with three unlikely allies, will do all they can to protect her. But as hidden pieces of their brutal histories unravel, Eila begins to understand just what went down in the harbor square. She soon realizes that following in her grandmother’s fearless footsteps may be the only way to save those she loves . . . including Raef.

(Synopsis taken from Goodreads)

My Review:

I really enjoyed reading Undertow, it had fresh ideas that I liked reading a lot. From the very start there is a mystery feel to the story, and as it progressed the more intrigued I was to know more. Elia Walker has struggled with her life, and not having her parents with her has made things difficult, but she is shocked to find out that she has inherited a million-dollar Cape Cod home. Not knowing who has giving her the house, she decides to take the opportunity of a life time. With that she moves to Cape Cod where adventures await and her family past is revealed.

Elia wasn't expecting to meet Raef O'Reilly, but the more time they spend together, the more protective and charming he gets. It is then that unexpected events happen and she notices how quick he is there to safe her. When Raef's true identity resurfaces, everyone around Elia is in danger including her. Now she has to find a way to safe those she loves. With a unique story line, Undertow is the perfect mix of mystery and paranormal. I'm really looking forward to reading more of the author and of the series. I recommend everyone to give this book a try.

Abbie has scars from her own tumultuous childhood, and losing Henry would destroy her. But with only mistrust and pain to bind them, can she and Adam ever find a way through regret to love and the family they could be?

My Review:

Adam's Boys is not just about two people falling completely in love, but it is also a story of redemption. From the very beginning I was captivated by the cover and title, it all seemed very mysterious. But as I was reading, the story started unfolding and it became completely different to what I thought it was going to be about from the start. Anna Clifton does a very good job of describing the feelings of both individuals who have been hurt in the past and whose only salvation is to be with each other.

After Adam's wife died of cancer, he was left alone to take care of his three-month-old baby. Having lost his wife left him hopeless and so he decides to flee to Australia where he suddenly finds himself spending time with Abbie. It was all supposed to be a fling, but what happened between them ended up connecting them even more after they went their separate ways. Now three years later, he is back in Australia and this time he is surprised to find out what he left behind.

After their time together, Abbie thought that there was a connection between her and Adam. Nothing could have prepared her for what was going to happen the minute Adam left. Now three years later, she sees him again and is determined to confront Adam and tell him that during their time together left her with his son.

The story is beautifully written, and it is also very touching. I liked the interaction between the characters and how they were able to overcome their pasts in order to move on. Although the story flowed, it seemed a bit rushed at times. But aside from that, the story had a good ending/resolution. I enjoyed reading it very much and I recommend everyone to give it a try.
